The documentary Darvin’s nightmare by Hubert Sauer, Austria, Belgium, France, 2004, is a striking work telling a story of the Tanzania and lake Victoria, which feeds the country with the fish.
The fish is a scientifically modified species, which has already eaten all the other fish in the lake. But for poor Tanzanians fishing industry is the only way to survive.
Population is starving, weak and bears AIDs. People are so poor they can’t buy enough food. Sp they use for food the waste from the fish factory – the rotten fish heads, they fry it and eat.
When the husband dies the woman has the choice: to die or earn money by prostitution. Often women are ill – they have AIDs, HIV. They sell sex (earning about 10$ for a night – compare to the nightguard’s fee 1$ per night) and infect their clients.
What was striking – they speak English quite well, they seem to be patriots – the prostitute girl, I guess her name was Eliza, sang the song “Tanzania, Tanzania” to the camera in her native language.
The man – the nightguard – had the only weapon his bow and the arrows (some of them poisoned). That seems so positively naïve and ethnic.
The city from the film – Mwanda – is the part of the big weapon trade system – Europe supplies weapons for maintaining the conflicts and gets fish for making it look nice from the other side.
This fish is the main Tanzania export issue to Europe and Europe don’t even care much of it.
Interesting the movie leaves out the Rwanda tragedy – the nightguard speaks of that but the numbers of the human loss are not reflected in the movie – and it’s about 1 million of human beings. This nightguard was the participant of this bloody mess and the war is better for him than life he and his compatriots lead.
